We recently recommended to one of our AX 2009 clients that they redeploy their AX infrastructure to reap the benefits from newer hardware, utilize virtual OS’s, and do some much needed housekeeping in the process. We recommended installing AX 2009 SP1 RU3 (their current level) on Windows 2012 and SQL 2012. There are some interesting hurdles when installing AX 2009 on SQL 2012, so we thought we would share our findings and spare you the grief.

Microsoft’s approach to analyzing information for business decision making in Dynamics AX has steadily matured from the perspective (no pun intended) of both a presentation layer to the user and a development layer for the technical resource.  What was known as Business Scorecard in AX v4.0 has become a much better experience in Role Centers in AX2009 and 2012, firmly based upon SharePoint fundamentals.

If you’ve been around reporting in Microsoft Dynamics AX for the past six years like I have, you’ve witnessed and accepted the gradual ascent of the report evolution from X++ reports to SSRS reports. Or you’ve done a good job avoiding it. If you categorize yourself into the latter half of that statement, you are running out of time…and options. In Dynamics AX v4.0, Microsoft introduced an acronym to the AX world in SSRS. In Dynamics AX 2012, SQL Server Reporting Services is now the mainstream reporting product, like it or not. I think you’ll like it.

AX 2012 Security - Ready for Prime Time!

I have been working with Dynamics AX security since AX 4.0.  It has always been a challenge and I have always encouraged clients to begin the security design and implementation process at the very beginning of the Dynamics AX implementation process.  Many did not heed the warnings and made a mad dash near go live to get some sort of security working.
